“The abs are made in the gym but revealed in the kitchen,” has long since been the legend of the elusive six pack abs. But it’s time to put the legend to rest and set the record straight!
The saying implies that we have control over what our tummy region looks like (through nutrition and exercise) — which is only true to an extent.
What the saying forgets to mention is that there is a force outside of our control: genetics.
What is the six pack?
The rectus abdominis muscles are often referred to as the “six pack”. There are tendinous intersections that cross the rectus abdominis muscles, like rungs on a ladder, and create the actual appearance of the six pack. The presence (or lack-thereof) of these intersections comes down to genetics.
What does this mean?
While we can cater our nutrition and training toward the goal of a visible six pack, we cannot change our genetics.
A person could never do a crunch in their life and have the appearance of a 6 pack … because of genetics.
While on the flip side, someone else could workout their core every single day and never have a 6 pack … because of genetics.
If having a visible six pack is a goal you’re striving for, we hope you give it your best effort and remember that it isn’t your fault if they don’t become as visible as you’d hoped.
Why should I train my core?
Even if a defined six pack isn’t in the cards, having a rock solid core is still a goal worth chasing!
A strong core helps:
- Improve posture, balance, and stability
- Reduce the risk of injury
- Improve athletic performance
- Make everyday tasks easier
